LIVE BY THE SPIRIT AND BOAST ON THE CROSS

GALATIANS 6:6-18

The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, awhile we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.
Galatians 6:6-18

LIFTING THE WEIGHT OFF THE PREACHER

  • The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him.

–      Galatians 6:6

WHAT THE NEW TESTAMENT SAYS ABOUT GIVING

  • For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing.” God is not concerned about oxen, is He? Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, for our sake temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share from the altar? So also the it was written, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops. If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things so that we will cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ. Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.

–      1 Corinthians 9:9-14

GOD WILL NOT BE MOCKED

  • Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

–      Galatians 6:7-8

GOD WINS IN THE END

  • Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.

–      1 Corinthians 4:5

WHAT THE FLESH REAPS…

  • “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

–      Revelation 21:8

HELL IS NO PARTY

  • “In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. “And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’

–      Luke 16:23-24

  • “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;

–      Matthew 25:41

GOD BLESSES THE SPIRITUAL FOR DOING GOOD

  • Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, awhile we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

–      Galatians 6:9-10

WHAT THE SPIRITUAL REAP…

  • “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

–      Matthew 5:11-12

  • Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

–      Matthew 19:21

THE FLESHLY AVOID PERSECUTION

  • See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

–      Galatians 6:12

THE SPIRITUAL BOAST ON THE CROSS

  • For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

–      Galatians 6:13-14

THE SPIRITUAL BOAST ON THE CROSS

  • For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

–      1 Corinthians 1:18

  • For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

–      Romans 1:16

A NEW LIFE IS WHAT COUNTS

  • For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

–      Galatians 6:15

BE A NEW PERSON TO HELP THOSE ON THE OUTSIDE COME INSIDE

  • Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

–      2 Corinthians 5:17-20

WALK IN GRACE

  • And those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen

–      Galatians 6:16-18

PAUL’S BRAND MARKS

  • Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.

–      2 Corinthians 11:23-27

  1. Read Galatians 6:9-10.  When was a time that you felt like giving up on doing good? Have you ever felt that doing good doesn’t pay off?  Who should we be looking to for our reward? Read Matthew 5:11-12; 19:21.

  1. Read Galatians 6:12.  Have you ever avoided a topic or speaking up about your faith to avoid persecution (being made fun of or not getting a promotion…)? Why are so many Christians today weak on their Biblical social stands (homosexuality, sex before marriage, profanity…)?

  1. Read Galatians 6:13-14; 1 Corinthians 1:18; Romans 1:16. Have you ever boasted/bragged about Jesus to unbelievers?

  1. Those who are on the outside wanting to be on the inside with God do good deeds (keep law) to try and accomplish this. Those that are on the inside with God (by grace) do good to help those on the outside come inside with God through His grace. Both do good but for different motives.  Discuss this difference.
