COMPLETELY TRUSTING IN GOD WITH YOUR LIFE

JOHN 21:3-14

  • Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.”  And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
  • Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.  But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.  So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread.  Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.”
  • Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.   Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord.   Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
    John 21:3-14

A LIFE LIVED WITHOUT JESUS IS NO LIFE AT ALL

  • Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.

–      John 21:3

APART FROM JESUS WE CAN DO NOTHING

  • “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

–      John 15:5

DON’T DECEIVE YOURSELF

  • For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

–      Galatians 6:3

DON’T TRUST IN YOURSELVES

  • and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.  For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.  If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

–      1 Timothy 6:5-8

DON’T TRUST IN WEALTH

  • ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. ‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.  ‘Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,

INVEST IN THE LORD

  • I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

–      Revelation 3:15-18

HUMBLE YOURSELF TO GOD

  • But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?”  They answered Him, “No.”

–      John 21:4-5

PRIDE GOES BEFORE THE FALL

  • Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

–      James 4:6b

  • “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”

–      Matthew 23:12

JESUS’ SIDE IS ALWAYS THE RIGHT SIDE

  • And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.

–      John 21:6

JESUS’ WAY USUALLY SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE

  • When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”  Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”  When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break;  so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.

–      Luke 5:4-7

GOD IS ALWAYS SMARTER THAN US

  • Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near.  Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts;  and let him return to the Lord,  and He will have compassion on him,  and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.  “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.  “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways  and My thoughts than your thoughts.

–      Isaiah 55:6-9

THE WORLD’S WISDOM DOES NOT LEAD TO GOD BUT AWAY FROM HIM

  • Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

–      1 Corinthians 1:20-21

TAKE THE PLUNGE FOR JESUS

  • Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.  But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.

–      John 21:7-8

JESUS’ BLESSINGS ARE LARGE AND FULL

  • So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread.  Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.” Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.

–      John 21:9-11

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD

  • Looking at them, Jesus said, “With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

–      Mark 10:27

DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?

  • “Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

–      Genesis 18:14

  • “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.

–      Job 42:2

HOW BIG IS YOUR GOD?

  • ‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You’

–      Jeremiah 32:17

  • “Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘If it is too difficult in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be too difficult in My sight?’ declares the Lord of hosts.

–      Zechariah 8:6

COME TO JESUS

  • Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord.   Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.

–      John 21:3-14

TRUST HIM WITH YOUR LIFE

  • “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

COMPLETELY TRUSTING GOD WITH YOUR LIFE

John 21:3-14

1.  Who do or have you completely trust your life to (person)?

2.  We know that we are to trust completely in God but why does it seem so hard to give Him every area of our lives? What area is hardest for you and why do you think that is?

3.  Read John 21:3. Jesus had told Peter that He would make him fishers of men but after Jesus resurrection Peter went back to fishing for fish. Why do you think that was? What affect did it have on the other disciples? What results did they see from it?  How does this relate to us today? (Read John 15:5)

4.  Read John 21-4-6. How do things work out when they trust Jesus? Tell of a time that your way resulted in failure and God’s way resulted in success (marriage, work, finances, relationships…)?

5.  Why does it so often seem that doing things God’s way is impossible or won’t work in today world/our lives?

6.  Read Isaiah 55:6-9. What does the Lord say about His ways compared to our ways?  What does He say about those willing to turn back to Him and try again?  What does this say about the character of God?

7.  Read 1 Corinthians 1:20-21. What is it that the World’s wisdom can never find or explain? Why do we seem to care so much about what the World thinks of us or the Bible/God?

8.  Read John 21:7. What is Peter’s response to seeing and hearing Jesus this time? Have you taken the plunge for Jesus, meaning not to dip your toe in the water or slowly ease yourself in but be fully immersed in Him?

9.  Read John 21:8-14.What was Jesus response when He saw them leaving their old occupation to come to Him? How should this give us confidence to once again take the plunge of trust in God?
