TRUE FELLOWSHIP REVEALS GOD’S LOVE

JOHN 17:13-26

¨  “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.  “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

“For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.  “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. “The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me
“Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
John 17:13-26

THIS WORLD IS NOT OUR HOME

¨  “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

¤  John 17:13-14

¨  For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.  And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.  But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

¤  Hebrews 11:14-16

¨  And He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,

¤  Ephesians 2:17-19

IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD

¨  “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

¤  John 17:15-19

¨  Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.

¤  2 Timothy 2:3-4

UNITY MANIFEST THE LOVE OF GOD

¨   “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. “The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.

    John 17:20-24

UNITY CREATES A SENSE OF AWE

¨  They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;

FELLOWSHIP SPREADS THE GOSPEL

¨  and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

¤  Acts 2:42-47

OUR GIFT CREATES UNITY AND UNITY LEADS TO  MATURITY

¨  And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

WORKING TOGETHER CAUSES GROWTH

¨  As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

¤  Ephesians 4:11-16

MAKE GOD KNOWN

¨  “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

¤  John 17:25-26

Sermon-based Bible Study Questions

 1. Read John 17:13-14.  What joy is Jesus speaking of since He is about to face a horrendous death?  How have you seen personal hatred toward you for your faith in Jesus?

2. Read John 17:15-19. What separates us from the world? What did the Father send Jesus into the world to do? What if he didn’t do it? What did he send us to do? What if we don’t?

3. What does it mean to be in the world but not of the world? What does that look like in day-to-day life?

4. Read John 17:20-24.  What does Jesus pray for His disciples and for what purpose?  How does unity help others believe? Why is unity in the church so hard to find? Why do churches split so much? What can each person at Calvary do to create that kind of unity?

5. Read Acts 2:42-47.  How can our community groups be like this and add to their number?

6. Read Ephesians 4:11-16. What is the role of a pastor and what is the role of the saints/congregation? What are the results? How does this create maturity?

7. Read John 17:25-26.  What affect did Jesus relationship to the Father have on others? What affect does Jesus want us to have on others based on our relationship with Him?

8. What can you work on this week to make Jesus know to others?
