OUR GLORY IS WHEN GOD IS GLORIFIED

JOHN 17:1-12

Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.

“Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. “Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.

“I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours; and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. “I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are

“While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

Sermon-based Bible Study Questions

1.   John 17 is a prayer from Jesus to the Father.  If Jesus prayed for help and others how much more should we?  What is your prayer life like? Why do so many find it difficult? What keeps you from having a strong prayer life? How do you maintain a strong prayer life?

2.   What is the meaning of life?  What do you think about what the pastor said the meaning of life is?

3.   Read John 17:1. What did Jesus ask for and why? How does that relate to us?

4.   Read John 17:2-4. According to verse 4 how did Jesus bring glory to the Father? According to verses 2-3 what were those things He did?  What work does God have for you to do? Are you doing it?

5.   Read John 17:5-6. How did Jesus reach the disciples, according to these verses and what was the result?  What can we learn from that and how can you be more purposeful about reaching others this way?

6.   Read John 5:22-23. Is it possible to glorify God through sincere faith that doesn’t include honoring Jesus as equal to the Father? What does this imply about all other faiths? What is your reaction to this truth?

7.   Read John 17:9-12.  How is Jesus glorified?  What must each believer be willing to do to accomplish this (vs. 11) (be specific)?

8.   John 14:13- What prayers are answered?  John 15:8-9- What is God glorified by? Matthew 5:16- What happens when we shine for God? Corinthians 10:31- How much of our lives should be devoted to glorifying God? Does this support/relate to the meaning of life?
