THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE “NO SPIN ZONE”

JOHN 16:5-15

  • “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
  • “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
    John 16:5-15

  •  “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

–      John 16:8

  • “And He, when He comes, will convict the world…concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me

–      John 16:8a,9

THE SPIN STOPS HERE

  • “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

–      John 3:16-18

THE CONVICTION OF THE SPIRIT

  • The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.

–      Romans 14:22

THE CONVICTION OF THE SPIRIT

  • Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;

  • and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

–      1 John 3:18-24

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE NO SPIN ZONE

  • “And He, when He comes, will convict the world…concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me

–      John 16:8a,10

THE SPIN STOPS HERE

  • For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

  • that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

–      Romans 10:2-4,9-11

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE NO SPIN ZONE

  • “And He, when He comes, will convict the world…concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

–      John 16:8a,11

THE SPIN STOPS HERE

  • And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

–      Revelation 20:10

  •  “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

–      John 16:13-14

Sermon-based Bible Studay Questions

1. What does the phrase, ” No spin zone,” mean?  How do politicians “spin” things? Kids? Us?  Why?

2. Read John 16″5-6.  Why were the disciples felling sorrowful?  How was this affecting their ability to respond to Jesus correctly?  What are we like when our lives are a mess?

3. Read John 16:7.  How was it an advantage to the disciples for Jesus to leave? Why is this, an advantage?  Is it possible for one to believe in Jesus but not have the Holy Spirit?  Tell of how the Holy Spirit has worked in your life to your advantage.

4. Read John 16:8-9 & 3:16-18.  What is the role of the Holy Spirit with the unbelieving world? What sin in particular will He convict them of?  Which sin keeps someone out of heaven?  What does the Holy Spirit use to do His work? How can our lives convict others and what happen when it does?

5. What does a life look like that draw/influences others to believe in Jesus?  What areas of our lives could we polish up to be a better witness?  Will you?

6. Read John 16:8,10 & Romans 10:2-4, 9-11.  How is the world’s sense of “righteousness” different that God’s?  How do we obtain God’s righteousness?  How does the Holy Spirit lead us into righteousness?

7. Read John 16:8,11 & Revelations 20:10. What is Satan’s destiny?  How should knowing (through the Spirit) that Satan will ultimately be defeated affect our attitudes?  How differently do two teams look at the end of a game?

8. Read John 16:13-15.  What will the Spirit guide you into?  How will you know it’s Gods’s truth (key: verse 14a)?  Can you handle the truth about your life as the Spirit speaks into it?
