Sermon-Outline

Have You Died Yet?

John 12:12-26

  • On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.” Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
  • These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him. So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. For this reason also the people went and met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.”
    John 12:12-19

The Prophecy

  • The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone. This is the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. O Lord, do save, we beseech You; O Lord, we beseech You, do send prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord;  We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and He has given us light;

                                Psalm 118:22-27

  • Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

                                Zechariah 9:9

  • These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him. So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. For this reason also the people went and met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.”
    John 12:16-19

Do You Understand?

  • And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

                                Romans 8:28

  • Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.

                                1 Peter 4:12-16

A Sign of Things to Come

  • Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast; these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip came and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus.

                                John 12:20-22

  •  “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd. “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again.

                                John 10:16-17

Have You Died Yet?

  • And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

                                John 12:23-26

  • Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.

                                Romans 6:4-6

  • For he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

                                Romans 6:7-10

  • Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

                                Romans 6:11-14

Sermon-based Bible Study Questions

1. Read John 12:12-19.  What was the reason that so many came out to greet Jesus?  What do you think their expectations were?  What happens a week later when Jesus doesn’t meet their expectations?  How did you feel the last time Jesus didn’t meet your expectations, work things out the way you had hoped?

2. How was this entry different than His past entry (John 7:1-9) into Jerusalem? Why do you think it was different?  What can we learn about how God works from this?

3. Read John 12:16-19.  When was a time that you were like the disciples and didn’t understand at the moment why things were happening the way they were? How did God work them out in the end?

4. Read Romans 8:28.  Who does God work things out for?  God works out things for people who are called to live according to whose purpose?  How do these two attributes – love and living for God’s purpose over our own – work out for our good?

5. Read 1 Peter 4:12-16.  How are we to respond to “fiery ordeals” in our life?  What shouldn’t we be suffering for? What has happened in your life that made you stronger in the end?

6. Read John 12:23-26.  When is a seed most effective, above ground or buried?  Have you died to self yet or did you just say some salvation prayer but haven’t produced any fruit? How is your life impacting others for God? If you haven’t died to self yet what’s holding you back from following Jesus completely?

7. Read Romans 6:4-14. How has your life changed since believing in Jesus?  What sins have you put to death?
