Sermon Outline

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF GOD?

DO YOU SEE A GOD OF WRATH/ANGER?

A jealous and avenging God is the Lord; The Lord is avenging and wrathful. The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies.

–      Nahum 1:2

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

–      Romans 12:19

For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

–      Ephesians 5:5-6

The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people. “Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation.”

–      Exodus 32:9-10

“You shall not allow a sorceress to live… “He who sacrifices to any god, other than to the Lord alone, shall be utterly destroyed…“You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. “If you afflict him at all, and if he does cry out to Me, I will surely hear his cry; and My anger will be kindled, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.

–      Exodus 22:18,20,22-24

“The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

–      Matthew 13:41-42

DO YOU SEE A GOD OF JUDGEMENT & LEGALISM?

“Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

–      Matthew 5:48

“You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.

–      Deuteronomy 18:13

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

–      James 2:10

DO YOU SEE A GOD OF GRACE (FIRE INSURANCE)?

Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either.

–      John 8:10-11

“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

–      John 3:17

The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

–      Romans 5:20-21

DO YOU SEE A GOD OF LOVE?

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son…

–      John 3:16a

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

–      1 John 4:7

A loving God will not send anyone to hell.

–      Not in Bible

DO YOU SEE A GOD OF HEALTH WEALTH AND PROSPERITY?

And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God. “Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.

–      Mark 11:22-24

By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible…And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

–       Hebrews 11:3,6

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

–      3 John 2

“It’s a matter of your faith. You got one-dollar faith, and you ask for a ten thousand-dollar item, it ain’t gonna work. It won’t work. Jesus said, “According to your faith”, not “according to His will, if He can work it into His busy schedule.” He said, “according to your faith be it unto you.” Now I may want a Rolls Royce and don’t have but bicycle faith. Guess what I’m gonna get? A bicycle”

–      (Frederick K.C. Price, “Praise the Lord” broadcast on TBN, 21 September 1990, taken from Documentation for Christianity in Crisis by Hank Hanegraaff).

WHO DOES GOD SAY HIS IS?

Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished

–      Exodus 34:6-7a

A jealous and avenging God is the Lord; The Lord is avenging and wrathful. The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power…

–      Nahum 1:2-3a

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

–      Romans 12:19-21

For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

–      1 Thessalonians 5:9-11

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.  For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.

–      James 2:10-13

Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”

–      John 8:10-11

“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

–      John 3:17-18

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

–      John 3:16

By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible…And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him…All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

–       Hebrews 11:3,6,13

…for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

–      1 John 4:8b-11

For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

–      1 Corinthians 1:18

Sermon-based Bible Study Questions

1. Which view of God did you grow up knowing: The God of wrath, judgment, grace, love or health, wealth and prosperity or a true balance of God?  What dominations or churches tend to lean one way or the other?  Who was the biggest influence in your life in constructing your view of God?

2. How has your view of God affected your relationship with Him and others?

3. Why do some churches heavily preach a wrathful God?  What is the pro’s and con’s of this preaching?  (Nahum 1:2, Matthew 13:41-42)

4. Read Exodus 22:18,20; Leviticus 19:31.  Why do you think the Pastor and people of the Salem witch-hunts did what they did?  How does these scriptures apply today to Christians that go to palm readers and follow horoscopes?

5. Why do you think some churches are so legalistic and judgmental?  Have you been to one and what was your experience?

6. Why do you think mega church preachers like Joel Osteen are so successful by preaching a loving God who would not put people in Hell and a God who want us to be healthy, rich and successful? Does God want these things for us? What is the harm in this kind of preaching?

7. What were your thoughts during the sermon when some of the verses were show in full context?  Why do so many take God’s word out of context?

8. Read Exodus 34:6-7 and 1 John 4:8-11.  How are these more accurate (balanced) descriptions of God?  How does the cross bring all these together? Has your view of God changed at all since first accepting Him in your life? How?
