Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart

“He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me”
Psalm 50:23

I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders.

Psalm 9:1

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
Ephesians 5:20

Thanks for deliverance from our enemies.

“I love You, O Lord, my strength.”  The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.  I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

                                Psalm 18:1-3

Willingly I will sacrifice to You; I will give thanks to Your name, O Lord, for it is good.  For He has delivered me from all trouble, and my eye has looked with satisfaction upon my enemies.

                                Psalm 54:6-7

Thanks for the forgiveness of our sins.

I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; and You forgave the guilt of my sin.

                                Psalm 32:5

Thanks for the forgiveness of our sins.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen.

                                Galatians 1:3-5

Thanks for answered prayer.

In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry for help before Him came into His ears.

                                Psalm 18:6

This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

                                1 John 5:14-15

Thanks for compassion toward the afflicted and oppressed.

I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul will make its boast in the Lord; the humble will hear it and rejoice.  O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces will never be ashamed.

Thanks for compassion toward the afflicted and oppressed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.  The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.  O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

                                Psalm 34:1-8

“He raises the poor from the dust, He lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with nobles, and inherit a seat of honor; for the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and He set the world on them.

                                1 Samuel 2:8

Thanks for executing justice.

“The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.

                                Deuteronomy 32:4

Thanks for continuing guidance.

‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.  ‘Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  ‘You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

                                Jeremiah 29:11-13

Your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.”

                                Isaiah 30:21

Thanks when things are going good.

O clap your hands, all peoples; shout to God with the voice of joy.  For the Lord Most High is to be feared, a great King over all the earth.  He subdues peoples under us and nations under our feet. He chooses our inheritance for us, the glory of Jacob whom He loves. God has ascended with a shout, the Lord, with the sound of a trumpet.  Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

                                Psalm 47:1-6

Thanks when things are going bad.

Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped.  He said,  “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there.  The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.  Blessed be the name of the Lord.”  Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!”  But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

                                Job 1:20-22, 2:9-10

Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; speak of all His wonders.  Glory in His holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad.  Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually.  Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done, His marvels and the judgments from His mouth

                                1 Chronicles 16:8-12

Sermon-Based bible Study Notes

1. What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory?  What is your worst? What is your favorite food for Thanksgiving?

2. What is the one thing you are most thankful for this year?

3. Read Psalm 18:1-3.  Tell of a time that you didn’t take matters into your own hands and God delivered you from someone who was making your life difficult?

4. Read Galatians 1:3-5.  Have someone in the group who hasn’t shared their salvation story with the group tell it.

5. Read Psalm 18:6.  Share an answered prayer with the group. What are you currently praying most fervently for?

6. Read Psalm 34:1-8.  Name a time when the Lord provided for you financially?

7. Read Isaiah 30:21.  Have you ever felt like you heard the voice of God whispering in your ear about what direction to go?  If you have, tell about that time.

8. Read Job 1:20-22, 2:9-10.  What is the worst thing you went through this last year?  What is the worst thing you have ever been through?  Did you see God working in this? How? Why should we thank God in bad times?

9. Read 1 Chronicles16:8-12.  These verses tell us to tell others about the great things God is doing in your life.  What might happen if we started telling non-believers about the great things God is doing in our lives?  Could you make a commitment to share each week or month with someone outside the church and believers about what God has done in your life?
